French school of the 19th century. "King... - Lot 66 - Osenat
French school of the 19th century. "King Charles X leaves for Cherbourg in 1830." Oil on canvas (re-canvas). 80 x 60 cm. Gilded frame with fleur-de-lys decoration, with mark of Souty Lescudier (1861-1875) Background: On August 16, 1830, the king was the first to come down, dressed in a frac and blue trousers and wearing a grey hat. His face, like that of the dolphin, is imbued with resignation when he sets foot on the bridge. Next come the Duke of Bordeaux, carried in the arms of Mr. de Damas (shown here older than he really was), the Dauphin dressed in black, his clothes in disorder, a red ribbon at the buttonhole, the Duchess of Angoulême, leaning on the arm of General de Larochejacquelein, the Duchess of Berry, giving her arm to Mr. de Charette, and Mademoiselle led by Madame de Gontaut. Eighteen people, including the Duke of Ragusa, the Prince of Luxembourg and Mr. de Menars, accompany them on the Great-Britain. The rest of the suite takes place aboard the Charles-Carroll. Standing on deck, Charles X thanked the commissioners for their consideration, and settled a few final personal matters. He declared that he did not want to be a burden on France or any foreign power. Provenance: Old Alexandre collection, sale Cornette de Saint Cyr (November 8, 1995).
