Important bathtub from the Chateau de Saint Cloud, reputed to have been used by Queen Marie Antoinette. In white marble, worked with amati background in the upper part. With brass cartridge engraved "queen Marie -Antoinette's marble bath". from st cloud palace. Marie- Antoinette incurred considerable popular odium owing to the rumour that even during periods of famine she daily bathed in milk. st cloud was bombarded and reduced to ruins during the siege of paris in 1870. this bath and other relics from the palace were purchased by mr lawson johnston (lord luke's father) from the French government in 1889" ("Queen's marble bath").
