George JONES (London 1786 - 1869) The Battle of Inkermann 18 - Lot 80
George JONES (London 1786 - 1869) The Battle of Inkermann 1854 Black pencil and brown wash on paper 77 x 133 cm Dedicated, signed and dated below in the centre: a tribute of esteem ....Jones R.A. 1861 Framed under glass While part of the English army occupies the very important position of Inkermann, the Russians, in the favour of deep darkness, advance on this point during the night of 4 to 5 November 1854. They wait for the first light of day to deliver blows assured: it is nearly eight o'clock. The English, surrounded and crushed by a superior enemy, fought with indomitable firmness. The French, impetuous allies, rushed onto the battlefield and made large gaps in the enemy's ranks. The Russians, terrified, revived the voice of their officers: the battle redoubled. The French fought like lions, but, outnumbered, they were forced to withdraw in the face of the growing enemy stream, allowing the Russians to regain possession of the terrain. In our drawing, the Russians crown the crest of the Inkermann Plateau. They managed to envelop the English regiment of guards, each soldier falling one by one without wanting to retreat. But the Zouaves, the foot chasseurs, the Algerian riflemen are there. They're waiting for the signal. General Bosquet goes through their ranks, reminding them of the glory and energy of their past.
