Bronze figure with brown patina representing... - Lot 288 - Osenat
Bronze figure with brown patina representing a bather after Christophe Gabriel Allegrain , inscribed Allegrain (on the base). Second half of the XIXth century. H: 27 cm This bronze was made after the famous Bather of Christophe Gabriel Allegrain (1710-1795) mentioned in the 1767 livret du salon as visible in the sculptor's studio (G. Scherf, L'Antiquité rêvée, cat. Exp., Musée du Louvre, Paris, 2010, p.99-101). Denis Diderot took a passion for this sculpture and wrote: "Beautiful, beautiful, sublime figure (...) even the most beautiful, the most perfect figure of a woman that the modernists have made (...) It has been said that a woman had a firm throat, this one has an elastic throat like the flesh (...) that we always expect to see her move" (Denis Diderot, Salons III (1767), 1995, p.483-484).
