Felix GENAILLE (1826 - 1880) Portrait of... - Lot 131 - Osenat
Felix GENAILLE (1826 - 1880) Portrait of King Louis Philippe (1830-1840) Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right: "F. Genaille. 1867. dap. E. Dubuffe. 1849". 92.5 x 73 cm. Some repaints. Wooden frame and framing. Provenance: This portrait of Louis Philippe is believed to come from the Orleans family. Louis Philippe's son, Gaston d'Orléans, married the daughter of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil and received this painting as a gift. The descendants still owned it until 2010. Biography: Felix François Barthélémy GENAILLE is a French painter, engraver, draughtsman and lithographer born in Monceau-les-Leups in the Aisne department in 1826. He first trained at the Saint-Quentin School of Drawing in the class of Louis Lemasle (1788-1876), then entered the Beaux-Arts de Paris at the age of twenty-one. While attending the classes of Chassériau and Ingres, he attended the studio of Ary Scheffer, which allowed him to better express his romantic temperament. He exhibited for the first time at the Salon in 1846. Genaille during the Second Empire was successful as a portraitist and produced many official portraits (Napoleon III, Eugenie) as well as more intimate works depicting members of the imperial court and the high bourgeoisie. He received numerous commissions for religious paintings to decorate private chapels and regularly presented genre scenes inspired by positive feelings at the Salon until 1874. His style is marked by a perfect technical mastery in the service of the romantic exuberance of the subjects. As a portraitist, he endeavoured to restore the personality of his models and his works are always of great psychological finesse. He sets up his studio in Paris in the new districts where his clients live (Boulevard de Rochechouart then Rue Blanche) while having a property in Bois-Colombes. Genaille died in 1880. His works are present in the collections of the Musée d'Orsay (Paris). His official portrait of Napoleon III is exhibited at the Risorgimento
