AUBUSSON End of 19th century Important Tapestry Technical ch - Lot 240
AUBUSSON End of 19th century Important Tapestry Technical characteristics. In Wool and Silk Good general condition Tapestry decorated with acanthus leaves, cabbage and aristoloches. Seeding border with flowering plants framed by vases with floral bouquets. 250 x 230 cm Note: The so-called "cabbage leaf" tapestries, also called "aristolochian leaves", represent oversized acanthus leaves. Woven mainly during the second half of the 16th century, these greenery with dense foliage are part of the tradition of the floral tapestries of the Millefleurs of the 15th and early 16th centuries. Under the influence of the Italian Renaissance, the introduction of perspective gave prominence to compositions that became more monumental. The stereotypical stylization of traditional Millefleurs is replaced by powerful acanthus leaves. This magnificent tapestry presents in the upper part a background of serrated cabbage leaves animated with flowers, fruits and birds. A splendid deer lying down occupies the lower part. The separation between the two registers is marked by a river that disappears at the right centre of the composition. The central scene is highlighted by a rich border decorated with leaves, flowers and fruits and animated by eight female figures. The counter-edging with imitation branch is new, we do not know of any other example.
