CORROZET (Gilles), Pierre BONFONS, Jean RABEL and Jacques DU BREUL. Antiques and the most remarkable things of Paris. In Paris, by Nicolas Bonfons, 1608. Small in-8, (12)-447-(1) pp, semi-rigid vellum, smooth back with ink title, padded binding with some staining, renewed guards, some wetting (old binding), DEFINITIVE EDITION, IN ORIGINAL PART. NUMBER OF ILLUSTRATION in the text: a copper by F. -Louis Petit, 54 woods engraved by Jean Rabel, some of which represent missing monuments, with a typographical mark also engraved on wood. A CLASSIC IN PARIS, BOTH HISTORY AND TOUR GUIDE, INSCRIBING THE PAST IN THE MODERN GEOGRAPHY OF THE CITY. The book was originally published in 1532 by the bookseller, poet and historian Gilles Corrozet (1510-1568) in the form of a booklet of 66 ff. only, entitled La Fleur des antiquitez, singularitez et excellences de la [...] ville et cité de Paris. It was a continuous success maintained for three quarters of a century by regular re-releases, increased in three successive stages (many intermediate editions, in addition, conforming to it or proposing modifications at the margin). A first significant increase occurred in 1550, proposed by Gilles Corrozet himself, under the title Les Antiquitez, histoires et singularitez de Paris, and, in 1581, a second increased version was established by another bookseller, Nicolas Bonfons (died in 1626) and appeared under the title Les Antiquitez, chroniques et singularitez de Paris. Then, a second Book. De la Sepulture des roys et roynes de France, princes, princes, princesses was published in 1588 by the painter, engraver, writer and publisher Jean Rabel, who decorated it for the first time with 55 woods of his own making. Finally, in this edition, the theologian and historian Jacques Du Breul (1528-1614), a Benedictine from Saint-Germain-des-Prés, inserted various scholarly remarks, while a copper was added to the illustration.
