TEMPLE (William). Remarks on the state of the United Provinces of the Netherlands. In Utrecht, Antoine Schouten, 1697. Small in-12, (24)-262-(2 white) pp.., title printed in red and black, fawn spotted calf, smooth back partitioned and floral with brown title piece, triple gilded net framing the dishes with small irons with circular golden corners and golden coat of arms in the centre, threaded cuts, red slices, tarnished back with restoration at the upper headdress and gallery of worms at the lower headdress, some wetting on the dishes, used corners (18th century binding) Original work published in English in 1672. ONE OF THE LINKS BETWEEN HUMANISM AND THE SPIRIT OF ENLIGHTENMENT. William Temple (1628-1699), a statesman and diplomat, served twice as ambassador to the United Provinces, during the negotiations for the Triple Alliance and Peace of Aachen in 1667-1668 and for the Westminster Treaty in 1674. After being called upon by the royal power to reorganize the Privy Council, he was again employed as a mediator in 1679 to prepare the Treaty of Nijmegen. ADMIRATOR OF MACHIAVEL, MONTAIGNE, VOSSIUS OR SAINT-EVREMOND, WILLIAM TEMPLE WAS A FREE PENSEUR OF REPUBLICAN CONVICTIONS, FAVOURING RELIGIOUS AND INTELLECTUAL TOLERANCE, as the chapter on religion in this book illustrates admirably. Jonathan Swift served as his secretary from 1689 to 1699 and was clearly influenced, both in terms of ideas and style, with William Temple's writings characterized by an ease of conversation.
