Berthel THORVALDSEN (1770 - 1844) After Tête de Méduse after - Lot 66
Berthel THORVALDSEN (1770 - 1844) After Tête de Méduse after the ancient white marble of the 19th century High: 45 cm (Restoration) Historical: The Meduse Rondanini is a Roman copy discovered in the palace of the same name made after a Greek original in bronze attributed to Phildias dating from the 5th century. Today preserved at the Glyptothek in Munich, this marble, very appreciated in the 18th century, has been copied by the greatest sculptors. The most famous copy being that of the Lyon sculptor Joseph CHINARD (1756 - 1813) kept at the Malmaison Castle Museum (inv.M.M.2001.5.1). Another very beautiful copy made in Rome in 1764 by the important British neo-classical sculptor Joseph NOLLEKENS (1737 - 1823) is kept at Burghley House, Stamford in the United Kingdom. If there are many plaster casts dating from the 19th century, there are very few beautiful marble copies. Berthel THORVALDSEN was a great lover of antiquities and possessed many plaster prints (now kept at the Th orvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen). This antique copy fits perfectly into the corpus of Thorvaldsen's work. Provenance: Private collection, Paris
