MARIE-THÉRÈSE OF AUSTRIA. Letter signed "Maria... - Lot 37 - Osenat
MARIE-THÉRÈSE OF AUSTRIA. Letter signed "Maria Theresin" to her Controller General of Finances, Count Ludwig von Zinzendorf. S.l., August 9, 1768. 1/2 p. in-4, mourning border. "DA ICH BESCHLOSSEN HABE, DAß DIE VISITATION ALLER CASSEN IN MEINER GANZEN MONARCHIE für das erste Mal am 31n dieser laufenden Monats bewürket werden solle, so wird er das diesfalls nöthige mit Einverständniß des Kammer-Præsidenten in der größten Geheimde veranstalten, auf daß mit ihr gedachten Visitation bey allen Cassen auf einmal fürgegangen werden möge... " Translation: "As I have decided that THE INSPECTION OF ALL TREASURIES IN MY ENTIRE EMPIRE should be conducted for the first time on the current 31st, he will organize this in this case in the utmost secrecy with the necessary agreement of the President of the Chamber of Accounts [his brother Johann Karl Zinzendorf], whereupon I wish your planned inspection to be carried out at once..." EMPRESS MARIE-THERESE (1717-1780) DOMINATED THE AUSTRIAN EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. After having had to defend her right to rule the Austrian monarchy against a coalition of European powers, Maria Theresa, daughter of the German Emperor Charles VI and wife of Francis of Lorraine (from whom she derived her title of Empress), inaugurated a brilliant reign: she surrounded herself with the right people, reformed the administration, reorganized the army and, benefiting from a genuine economic and demographic boom, reaffirmed Austria as a great power. Conservative and hostile to the Enlightenment like most of her subjects, she established an effective autocracy, and promoted the arts at a time when Austrian Baroque was flourishing. Concerned about international equilibrium, and worried about Prussian power, she reversed her alliances with France, and her daughter Marie-Antoinette married the future Louis XVI.
