C.CLEMENCET " L'Art de vérifier les Dates ou faits historiques des chartes, des chroniques, et anciens monumens depuis la naissance de notre Seigneur" Valade Imprimeur du Roi Imprimeur, 1819. Volume Seventeenth. 506 pages. 21 x 13 cm. Stamp in ink of the Library of Saint Helene and the Library of the Convent of the Capuchins in Le Mans on the title page. Two pages written in ink " Napoleon from E.V.HOLLAND " Bound in calf with remains of gold decoration on the spine. A.B.E. History: This book is one of the symbols of the Emperor's library in St. Helena. It bears on two pages the mention of Lady Holland ("E.V." referring to her first and maiden name: Elizabeth Vassall). While her husband multiplied her political actions, Lady Holland tried to make the life of the exiles of Longwood more pleasant by sending them objects useful to their comfort and boxes of books. Napoleon's rush to open the book cases, scattering the books on the floor, is a famous image in the Helenian legend. In April 1821, Napoleon placed an autographed note "Emperor Napoleon to Lady Holland, a token of satisfaction and esteem" in a snuff box that Generals Bertrand and Montholon, in ceremonial dress, came to solemnly present to him the following August.
