JOTAU BINDING. - LOTI (Pierre). My Brother... - Lot 26 - Osenat
JOTAU BINDING. - LOTI (Pierre). My Brother Yves. Paris, Cal_x0002_mann-Lévy, 1925. In-16, (4 of which the first 2 are blank)-343-(1 blank) pp. bound in moulded resin, hinged on hinges, black chamfered boards, smooth garnet spine with gilt metal title-piece, counter-guards and end-papers in finely embossed silk with polychrome decoration of scales, gilt head (Jotau binding - patented S.G.D.G.). AN ESTHETIC AND TECHNICAL PRINCIPLE OF THE Vanguard, anticipating the work of Jean de Gonet on the Revorim. At the head of one of the largest French bookbinding and cardboard companies, the industrialist Joseph Taupin was always attentive to technical innovations, and when he heard of the development of a new resin called "pollopas" (1929), similar to bakelite but colourless and allowing for a colouring in the mass, he envisaged its application to the mass production of moulded bindings. He produced a few test specimens, under the brand name Jotau (acrostic for JOseph TAUpin), but did not finally launch mass production because of the cost of production and the fragility of the finished material.
