NOTEBOOK, GOLDSMITH OF THE KING Pair of concave gilt shoe buckles decorated with a frieze of fleur-de-lis linked by branches of foliage. The bottom is trimmed with a fine brown patent leather, the back with two polished steel buckles, two mobile pins and two fixing points. 7.5 x 4.4 cm. The shoe buckle holders conceal a pair of chased vermeil stocking buckles of the same design, with polished steel fasteners with two pins. Presented in their shaped case, covered with red morocco, sheathed inside with ivory silk, presenting on the reverse side on a green background the round label of "Cahier orfèvre du Roi menus plaisirs quai des orfèvres n°58". The shoe buckles bear the hallmark of average silver guarantee, hallmark of 2nd title (1819-1838), goldsmith's hallmark in a square, mention " Doublé " (plated) and mention " 32 " (quantity of silver). The bottom buckles are stamped with the small silver guarantee (1819-1839) and the silversmith's hallmark followed by the words "Doublé". B.E. (case baillant). Nice quality. Restoration period. This type of buckles could have been used by the Peers of France. History : Jean Charles CAHIER (1772-ca. 1849) took over in 1819 the business of Biennais, of which he was a competitor, that is to say the shop on the ground floor, the cellar, the stables, and the whole first floor. He was the King's goldsmith from the beginning of the Restoration. Rewarded with a gold medal at the exhibitions of industrial products in 1819, 1823 and 1827, Cahier nevertheless encountered financial difficulties from 1828 onwards and went bankrupt after the Revolution of 1830 and the fall of his protector, King Charles X.
