Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) after - Moonlight... - Lot 93 - Osenat
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) after - Moonlight on Kanazawa, Japan - Tryptic of prints from the series called "Snow, Moon, Flowers" 38 x 75 cm + the frame - reprinted around 1930, publisher Adachi - The series "Snow, Moon, Flowers", painted by Hiroshige in 1857 is composed of three triptychs based on an old Chinese theme. The snow is represented by a view of the Kisokaido road in winter, the moon by a night landscape of Kanazawa and the swirls in this print represent flowers. For this painting: Moonlight over Kanazawa, Hiroshige takes as his theme a landscape known for its beauty. Kanazawa is a district of present-day Yokohama and was often painted by ukiyo-e artists. It is very likely that Hiroshige, being near Edo, visited it many times and knew the place well. Especially since people went there on pilgrimage. The painting is close to the Western style. With an economy of means, Hiroshige was able to retranscribe the moonlight: the moon is a circle where no color has been applied, above the blue of the sky fades at the height of the moon, and just above the mountains, on the horizon, the distant mist is represented by a purple blue. Biography of Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Japanese draughtsman, engraver and painter. Prolific author, active between 1818 and 1858, he created a work consisting of more than 5,400 prints. Along with Hokusai, he is one of the last great names of the print and, in particular, of the landscape print, in Japan.
