Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte (1856-1879), the... - Lot 224 - Osenat
Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte (1856-1879), the Imperial Prince. Pair of ivory cotton socks that belonged to the Prince. Embroidered in red silk thread on the top of the shank at the "N". Framed under glass with cartridge. Overall: 43 x 33.5 cm. B.E. Provenance : Collection UHLMANN. Biography: Xavier Uhlmann (1828-1904) entered the Tuileries at the beginning of 1857 as a footman: first as a bailiff in the Emperor's cabinet for a few months, he was then attached to the person of the heir to the throne, the Imperial Prince. In 1867, he was promoted to valet and in 1867 became valet to Napoleon III for a year before being appointed personal valet to the Imperial Prince. Until the latter's death in 1879, he remained in his service as the first valet, a companion in exile in England, and was the only person the Prince accepted to accompany him on his (last) journey to South Africa. He was then treasurer of the Empress Eugenie and steward of the imperial estate of Farnborough Hill until his own death.
