Art[icl]e 3e. It is likewise expressly forbidden for each of the doorkeepers of Malmaison to lodge anyone and to give them bed for any reason whatsoever. The s[ieu]r [Charles] Idatte, concierge, is charged with and responsible for the execution of the present decree... "JOSEPHINE EN SA MALMAISON: she acquired this discreet but elegant château on April 21, 1799, had it refurbished by several successive architects, including Percier and Fontaine, and pursued a policy of acquisitions until 1810 to enlarge the grounds. This was her chosen domain, where she experienced glory and retirement, where she welcomed her intimates as well as the great of the world, and where she indulged her taste for botany. Napoleon stayed there especially in 1801 and 1802, but came to say his final goodbyes to his family before his exile in 1815.
