COMPILE View of Twickenham in rectangular... - Lot 215 - Osenat
COMPILE View of Twickenham in rectangular shape with polychrome watercolour, gold and silver decoration. 18th century Height 23.5 cm - Width 31.5 cm (wear) Painter and table maker of King Louis XV, Compigné was specialized in the manufacture of relief paintings on pewter of exceptional quality. Coming from Italy, Compigné settled in Paris under the sign of King David in rue Greneta and specialized in boxes, tric-trac, checkers and chess games, snuffboxes and cane handles in blond tortoiseshell inlaid with gold. His technique, which remains mysterious, consists of placing on a tortoiseshell or metal support, a sheet of pewter previously stamped on a die which he then decorates with gouache, gold and silver with a coloured varnish. His themes of inspiration were views of castles, views of Paris and many genre and pastoral scenes as well as reworkings of paintings by famous painters.
