LISZT (Fra nz). Autograph letter signed, in French, [to Prince Frederick William Constantine of Hohenzollern-Hechingen]. Weimar, April 17, 1859. 2 pp. in-4: "I am very happy with the benevolence with which Your Highness welcomes my desire to find myself under your roof - where good thoughts and beautiful feelings are unceasingly present like the familiar spirits of your Court! If it depended only on me, I would set out at once, but HIS [ltesse] I [mpériale] MADAME LA GRANDE-DUCHESSE WISHES TO HONOR ME TO ASK ME (and in this case to ask means to command) TO BE PART OF A PROGRAMME FOR THE CELEBRATION OF THE 29th OF AUGUST, THE DAY OF S. M. THE EMPEROR OF RUSSIA, HIS NEWBORN [This is Grand Duchess Hélène, née Marie-Charlotte-Frédérique of Württemberg, widow of Grand Duke Michel, who held a brilliant literary and artistic salon in St. Petersburg]. I can therefore leave Weymar only on the 30th of this month and will not arrive in Löwenberg until May. According to what Seyfriz writes to me, Your Highness's chapel will already be on leave at that time, and I really regret not renewing my good and solid acquaintance with it this time. Nevertheless, I dare flatter myself that my lord will deign to find that I am neither too much nor too little, and unless I am counter-ordered, will come to offer you the sincere and most respectful homage with which I have the honor of being, of Your Highness, the most faithful servant... "THE PRINCE OF HOHENZOLLERN-HECHINGEN, ONE OF THE GREAT MEMORIES OF HIS TIME: Francophile, widower of the daughter of Prince Eugène de Beauharnais, Frederick William Constantine of Hohenzollern-Hechingen reigned in Löwenberg, then in Prussia, now Lwówek Slaski in Poland. There he maintained a high quality orchestra (Kapell), under the direction of Max Seifriz (Kapellmeister) from 1857, and welcomed many composers such as Berlioz and Liszt.
