C GRÖGER, after the Danish School of the... - Lot 141 - Osenat
C GRÖGER, after the Danish School of the 19th century The future King Christian VIII of Denmark in the uniform of Major General, wearing the insignia of the Order of the White Elephant and Danebrog, circa 1813-1814. Oil on oval canvas. 31 x 23.5 cm Gilt wood frame (splinters). Biography: Christian VIII, born in 1786, died in 1848, was son of the hereditary prince Frederick and ruled Norway in 1814. He bravely, but needlessly, resisted the Holy Alliance's decision to take Norway from Denmark and give it to Sweden (1814), and was forced to withdraw before Bernadotte's superior forces. Called to the Danish throne in 1839, on the death of Frederick VI, his cousin, he made some reforms, promoted the arts, sciences and literature, and built up rich collections.
