1934 BMW 315/1 Roadster - Lot 39
1934 BMW 315/1 Roadster Classic Car Registration Certificate Serial Number: 47706 - Only 242 units produced - One of the first BMW sports cars - 328 engine Introduced in 1934, the BMW 315/1 Roadster holds a pivotal place in the history of the Bavarian brand. Just a few years after BMW entered the automotive world, the manufacturer sought to demonstrate its technical and sporting expertise through a range of higher-performance models. A direct descendant of the BMW 303, the first BMW with a six-cylinder engine, the 315 featured a modern design for its time, with a space-frame chassis, independent front suspension, and a six-cylinder engine with overhead valves. It was on this basis that BMW developed the 315/1 Roadster, unveiled in 1934. With its particularly elegant silhouette, long hood, rear-set cockpit, and sweeping fenders, it embodies the aesthetic of the great German sports roadsters of the interwar period. With only 242 units produced, the 315/1 is now considered one of the first true BMW sports cars, directly foreshadowing the legendary BMW 328 that would succeed it in 1936. It thus constitutes one of the cornerstones of the brand’s sporting heritage. The example offered for sale belonged for thirty years to an American collector, who had acquired it from a collector in Toronto. It was then purchased by a prominent Dutch collector in 2018 at the Bonhams auction at Quail Lodge. The file includes several invoices and letters dating from 1987 to 2001. We also have photos of the car in Canada, when it was painted red and cream. We then find it on the cover of Werner Oswald’s book, titled “Alle BMW Automobile, 1928–1978.” It was then green and black, which is how it appears today. It was subsequently acquired by a French enthusiast, who, five years ago, got the car running again and restored the brakes. It has the unique feature of being equipped with the excellent BMW 328 engine powered by three Solex carburetors, which gives it undeniable driving pleasure. Please note that the car’s mechanical system requires a thorough overhaul before use, and that it is sold without its soft top, only with its roll bar. It features the excellent BMW 328 engine powered by three Solex carburetors, which gives it undeniable driving pleasure. This is a very elegant vehicle, suitable for participating in sporting events, touring rallies, or concours d’élégance…… The soft top folds completely into its compartment, which is particularly elegant! It represents a particularly rare opportunity to acquire one of the most exclusive models from BMW’s pre-war production.
