1904 MAXWELL - Lot 20
1904 MAXWELL Type L 05 French collector's registration document Twin-cylinder 2 participations in the London-Brighton Rally The MAXWELL brand was created in 1903 in TARRYTOWN, N.Y., by Jonathan MAXWELL (formerly an engineer at OLDSMOBILE) and Benjamin BRISCOE (financier). The brand was taken over by CHRYSLER during the stock market crash after the First World War. Production began in July 1904, notably the current “L05” (light) TOURABOUT 2-seater with a 1600cc flat 2-cylinder boxer engine, water-cooled by thermosyphon without a pump. The first chassis were made of “armored oak”, the current model would be from October or November 1904, there would be 3 or 4 left in the USA according to the “MAXWELL REGISTER” and possibly another one that would be abandoned in a container somewhere in California. Subsequently, the chassis were made entirely of steel. It was started with a crank, the ignition was battery-operated and there was one vibrator per cylinder in a housing on the engine partition wall. Lubrication was provided by pressurizing an oil reservoir and a drip feed with three adjustable outlets that were visible while driving. It had two forward speeds and one reverse speed. The gearbox is a planetary epicyclic type, the forward gear is controlled by the steering wheel, the accelerator and the strap brake on the rear wheels are foot-operated, the parking brake is applied by locking the foot brake. This Maxwell was acquired by its owner in March 2003, after a stint in Belgium and the United Kingdom. It runs well and is fast for its age, capable of reaching ≈ 70 km/h in 2nd gear at 1,200 rpm. Idle speed is ≈ 120 rpm. It would appear to have been restored in the United States in the 1970s, respecting its origins. This Maxwell has taken part in numerous classic car events, including the Hauts de Seine rally, Paris-Rouen, Ancêtres en Picardie, Paris-Rambouillet, etc., but also took part in two commemorations of the famous London to Brighton run in November 1980 with its American owner and then with its current owner in November 2008, bearing the number 611. This rare automobile will of course be able to join the famous Teuf Teuf Club.
