RARE NATIONAL AWARD SABER AND BELT GIVEN BY FIRST CONSUL BONAPARTE TO REAR-ADMIRAL DECRES 11 VENTOSE AN IX. - Ebony hilt saber, carved with fish scales. Chased, gilded brass mounting. Short-tailed lion's head cap, decorated with palmettes, scales and spider web. Hilt with strong hollowed-out branch, topped by a winged trumpet forming a cornucopia and supporting an antique-style shield decorated and topped with a torch and foliage, on a patinated iron background. Rectangular body knot with palmettes, and two shuttle-shaped finials chased in relief with winged lightning bolts. Quillon à pans, curved towards the tip in the shape of a lioness's head, engraved on either side of the body knot below "Entse Boutet" and "MFture à VERSles". Curved, flat-backed blade, marked "Klingenthal" on the back, with counter-edge and hollow sides, engraved, gilded and blued in thirds with trophies of arms, wreaths of flowers and foliage. Blued-iron scabbard, engraved under the first strap, on one side, "Donné par le Premier Consul Bonaparte au Contre-Amiral Decres le 11 Ventôse An 9"; and, on the other side, "Combat sur le Vaisseau Le Guillaume Tell le 9 Germinal An 8". With four rich brass fittings and bowl, chased and gilded: The first bracelet is rectangular, decorated with the remains of the Nemean lion, a lictor beam surmounted by an empanelled helmet and a bundle of flags. The second bracelet is chased with a wreath of oak leaves, crossed axes and laurel leaves. The third trim is in the form of a keyboard with a Liberty bonnet on a coat-of-arms trophy. The shield is in the shape of a quiver with arrows, extended by an iron dart. The whole is chased in high relief. Fitted with two faceted pitons and gilded suspension rings. Good condition (two small nails missing from the pommel, two small chips in the upper part of the handle). The scabbard is original blued, slightly stained. The fittings are in their original gilding). - Admiral Decrès' broad sword belt. In skin covered with scarlet cloth, richly embroidered with cannetilles, sequins and gold foil, with geometric decoration of circles decorated with rosettes, octagons decorated with rosette palmettes, circles decorated with spider webs and lozenges decorated with foliate scrolls. The whole is edged on both sides with sequins and cannetilles. Pink silk lining (wear). Two bronze pitons, chased, gilded and lined inside with red morocco, bearing two strong gilded Milanese clasps. Blued and gilded iron snap hooks. Good condition. Length: 122 cm. Width: 10 cm. Short bail, external length: 23 cm. Clasp, outside length: 55 cm. - Its extremely rare Admiral Decrès belt plate. Oval-shaped, in chased bronze, gilded in matt gold on a burnished amati background. Blued-iron center, with sandblasted background, decorated in high relief with an antique-style bust of a woman in a shield and, on either side, sea monsters, tridents and rushes, all framed. The rim is decorated in relief on an amati background: On the upper part, a Roman-style shield and sword, on a cluster of four flags; On the lower part, a world map framed by horns of plenty and oak and laurel branches; On the sides, in relief, on eight-sided shields, Hercules' heads on clubs. Lined on the back with red morocco. Good condition. Tray: 10 x 15 cm. Inside: 5 x 9.5 cm. Exceptional quality workmanship, attributed to Boutet. Consulate period, in good condition. Attached is a modern bronze oval medallion, featuring a reproduction of a miniature of Admiral Decres, full-length, in full uniform, with engraved inscription on the back "Decres Denis contre-amiral en 1798". Source : - Denis Duc Decrès, Minister of the Navy under Emperor Napoleon I. - On his death, passed to his wife Rosine Anthoine de Saint-Joseph, duchesse Decrès (1788-1864). - On her death, passed to her universal legatee, her nephew, Louis Napoléon Suchet, 2nd Duke of Albufera, and subsequently to his descendants. - Belgian private collection. - Jean-Louis Noisiez Collection. History : This saber commemorates a glorious event: the battle of the Guillaume-Tell against three English ships off Malta, after the Battle of Aboukir. Arriving in Valletta in mid-August 1798, the ship played an active role in the defense of the island, which was surrounded by the British fleet and on which the English were about to land. On March 30, 1800, just as the island was about to fall, the Guillaume Tell tried to break through the blockade. Spotted by a frigate, it was joined by several other ships.
