Expert Jean-Claude Dey - Jean Louis Noisiez Collection History : The founding decree of 1802 did not specify any distinctive insignia: the Legion of Honor was an honorary title. Napoleon waited until he was proclaimed Emperor before setting the form of the decoration in the Imperial Decree of July 11, 1804 (22 Messidor, Year XII). On January 30, 1805, the Emperor created the "Grand Decoration", in the form of the Grand Eagle, a superior dignity that completed the hierarchy of the Legion of Honor and linked it more closely to European chivalric orders. Originally, the star of the Legion of Honor, also known as the "Eagle" in reference to the heraldic symbol on the reverse of the insignia, was worn exclusively on the lapel of the habit, the metal alone, gold or silver, distinguishing higher ranks and legionnaires. Reserved for a limited number of grand officers, the Grand Decoration consists of a red ribbon passing from the right shoulder to the left side, to which is attached the Grand Aigle (grand module insignia), completed by an embroidered plaque, beveled with rays and bearing the imperial eagle in its center.
