Glatz, Volontair Unterof im 8 Husaren Regiment". ("Taken from Emperor Napoleon I's campaign carriage on June 18, 1815 at the battle of Belle Alliance by G. Glatz, Volontair Unterof im 8e Régiment de Hussards") Stamped on the back with the Biennais bar, engraved with n°136 and three punches: - 1st title Paris, 1809-1819, - medium guarantee hallmark Paris 1809-1819, - goldsmith's hallmark with monkey by Martin Guillaume Biennais. Diameter: 208 mm. Weight : 261 gr. B.E. (slight wear and scratches). Provenance : - This plate was taken from Emperor Napoleon I's carriage at the Battle of the Belle Alliance by G. Glatz, a volunteer non-commissioned officer in the 8th Regiment of Prussian Hussars. - Piasa sale, December 4, 2006, n°136, experts Philippe Missilier and Jean-Christophe Palthey. History : The 4th Corps of the Prussian Cavalry was commanded by Prince Wilhelm of Prussia and its 2nd Brigade, under Major General von Sydow, included the 8th Regiment of Prussian Hussars, which took part in the pursuit launched on the evening of June 18, 1815. A box containing silver tableware was found under the seat of the Emperor's sedan: it was broken open with an axe and its contents were shared out as spoils of war. Martin-Guillaume Biennais (1764-1843) ran the "Au Singe Violet" shop at 283 rue Saint-Honoré in Paris from 1790 to 1819. In 1804, he produced the insignia for Napoleon's coronation ceremony, and later supplied all the silverware for the Emperor's household. His signature was "Orfèvre de Sa Majesté l'Empereur et Roi à Paris". Biennais produced simple plates, in silver or vermeil, for the Emperor's personal use during his military campaigns. Related works : - At least two other known plates with period provenance inscriptions on the rim or back. - Another plate in the Musée Napoléon I de Fontainebleau, given by the King of the Netherlands to Napoléon III.
