1898 Delahaye Type 0

Engine number 602
Gearbox number 602
French title
We are probably in the presence of one of the first examples of the type 0 of the end of the year 1898. Two revealing elements formally indicate to us, the presence of the big wheels with 14 spokes mounted at the back, with the big outer hub type sleigh, and steering column handlebar, sprockets and chain. Later models will have rear wheels of smaller diameter or diameter identical to those of the nosewheel, and steering wheel. We note precisely the number 602 hit in several places of the mechanical assembly that tells us the chassis number. It is particularly disturbing to note that this No. 602 corresponds to that of the chassis examined for the transition to Type 0 Mines. This certificate is dated later in relation to its date of production, which is common for the time. The body of this type 0 corresponds to the name "Duc" or "Petit Duc" that we find exactly in the DELAHAYE catalog of 1898-1899. The front of the first models, like this model, have not yet adopted the form of light windbreaker of later versions. The origin of this name "Duc" comes naturally from its horse-drawn origins, initially defining a city car and boardwalk widely open and lowered, without a coach seat, led by the interior seat by the owner, a seat for the servant can be installed in the back. Option of the era also proposed on type 0, sitting in the opposite direction of walking and footrest. Except new revelation, only 4 type 0 copies are surviving to date, 3 in France and 1 at the Grandson Museum in Switzerland. In two cases it is the version vis-à-vis, and in the other of a single barrel, bodywork also proposed in the catalogs of the time. Thus survive the three most common types of bodywork, mounted on type 0.
The story of this type 0 is quite simple to summarize, ordered new by a textile manufacturer of the town of Reuilly in the department of Indre, it will be kept in the property until its deposit during the creation of the Vatan museum, located not far in the same department. Museum created by the two brothers Camille and André Guignard in 1964. André Guignard remembers this car perfectly. After the death of the owner, his two sons will decide to seperate with this Delahaye from another era, the car will be auctioned on December 4, 1979 at a sale in Drouot, the car will leave on a bid of 51,500 frs . It should be noted that during its exhibition at the Museum of Vatan and during the sale, our type 0 had a modified front, decked out with a pseudo-formwork hood lengthening its appearance unsightly. During its restoration, the car has fortunately found its original presentation. This is a particularly rare model nowadays, in a very good state of conservation. Type 0 is an iconic model in the history of Delahaye production, a true junction between the sites of Tours and Paris.
