Large flag of the "Schutterij" citizen militia of the city o - Lot 88
Large flag of the "Schutterij" citizen militia of the city of Nijmegen. Composed of three strips of tricolor silk in Batavian colors: -one red, painted in the upper left corner on the obverse with a gold-ground medallion of a militiaman wearing an infantry chenille helmet, holding a palm in his hand, and on the reverse with a gold-ground medallion of an allegory of the Batavian Republic holding a shield marked "VRYHEYD GELYKHEYD BROEDERSCHAP" (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity) -a white "NYMEGEN" painted in gold a blue painted city coat of arms with double-headed eagle and lion and the inscription "ANNO 1796" in the lower right-hand corner. All presented in a modern two-sided frame under glass (not framed), the reverse under protection with the ornate Republic medallion visible. 141 x 150 cm. A.B.E. Dutch Republic period (1796) (Minor damage, wear to paint and inscriptions). Provenance : -Private collection. Referenced in the collection as coming from the descendants of a burgomaster of the city of Nijmegen. History : Nijmegen's citizen militia numbered several hundred men, as well as artillery with a wide variety of uniforms. Here, the obverse figure wears a helmet inspired by the French model of 1791. The allegory of the republic on the reverse is derived from that of the flag introduced for the Navy in March 1796 and designed by Langendjik. Our flag was probably used until 1799, when the civic militia was reorganized and new flags introduced. We would like to thank Mr. Martijn Wink for the information he provided for this article.
