Victor HUEN (1874-1939) - Lot 214
Victor HUEN (1874-1939) Battle of Ligny: The square of the 4th Regiment of Foot Grenadiers of the Guard facing von Lutzow's uhlans. Large oil on canvas (small accidents). 95 x 135 cm. Exhibition: Exhibited at the 1914 Salon des Artistes Français under number n°7287. Bibliography: This great work by Huen illustrated one of the "monuments" devoted to the Battle of Waterloo: Commandant Lachouque's "Waterloo, la fin d'un monde", Lavauzelle, 1985, p.202 (reproduced). Historical background: The moment represented is when Lieutenant-General von Lutzow falls to the ground (he will be taken prisoner). At the end of the day, the 4th Guards Grenadier Regiment forms up in a square. Von Lutzow is at the head of his uhlans and charges the French, believing they are dealing with simple national guards, but the Prussian lances break against the elite of the French army. The uhlans received a line of fire that knocked 83 men to the ground. Von Lutzow is overthrown and taken prisoner. The other Prussian units were no more successful in surrounding the French squares. Until nightfall, Prussian and French squadrons whirled and clashed on the slopes of the hills, in front of the squares that were slowly but surely advancing towards their destiny: tomorrow, June 15, would be Waterloo. Biography: Victor Huen (1874-1939) was an Alsatian painter, lithographer and illustrator, specializing in military painting and uniformological illustration. He was notably involved in the illustration of the uniformological map series Les uniformes du Premier Empire, directed by Commandant Eugène Louis Bucquoy.
