Edouard DETAILLE (1848-1912). - Lot 183
Edouard DETAILLE (1848-1912). General Lasalle's last charge at Wagram, killed on July 6, 1809. Large oil on canvas with a border of laurel leaf friezes and medallions with the number L intertwined in gold. Signed and dated 1910 lower left. With Brussels exhibition label. 190 x 173 cm. Exhibition : -Exposition universelle et internationale de Bruxelles, 1910: section française. n°103. Provenance : -Former Odilon Lannelongue collection (1840-1911), Auch (Maître Briscadieu), December 7, 1986 History : This oil on canvas was executed by Detaille for the 1910 International Exhibition, as seems to be borne out by the date of execution (1910) and the border with the cipher of the Belgian King Leopold II (who died in 1909). A similar border can be found on a canvas in the French pavilion. This characteristic frieze is reminiscent of Detaille's decorations for the Pantheon, Paris City Hall and the Hôtel Dufayel. As for the subject, this is one of Detaille's major works, "his" General Lasalle, which he painted several times, the last version being exhibited the year of his death at the Salon de l'Union Artistique. Our work, however, is distinguished by its background. Although the composition is identical, the riders have changed: dragons have replaced the cuirassiers. Our copy comes from Odilon Lannelongue, former deputy and senator of the Gers.
