Henri Félix Emmanuel PHILIPPOTEAUX (1815-1884) - Lot 148
Henri Félix Emmanuel PHILIPPOTEAUX (1815-1884) Sir Frederick Ponsonby wounded at the Battle of Waterloo, treated by a French army doctor Sketch signed lower left F. Ph Wooden frame and gilded stucco 30 x 41 cm Inscribed on the back: "Lord Ponsonby (?) an English dragoon general wounded at Waterloo, treated by a French doctor, unaware of the name of his savior, commissioned Philippoteaux to reproduce the scene in the hope that, by producing (?) a work of value, he would find this doctor to show his gratitude". Historical background : Colonel Frederick Cavendish Ponsonby, commander of the 12th Light Dragoons, was seriously wounded by the French after a reckless charge during the Battle of Waterloo. He owed his salvation initially to the protection of the French, before being found by his army after their defeat. He should not be confused with his cousin William, a general killed at Waterloo. A slightly larger copy was exhibited at the 1878 World's Fair.
