Jean Léon GEROME (1824-1904) Bonaparte entering the streets of Cairo. Dark patina bronze on base signed "J. L. GEROME" on one side and "F.BARBEDIENNE FONDEUR PARIS" on the other. On green marble base. Length : 40 cm. Width: 15 cm. Height: 45 cm. B.E. Historical background: This model was executed by Gérôme for the 1897 Salon. It perfectly reflects Gérôme's taste for the Orient and history, a staunch supporter of classical painting who was considerably criticized by his peers and gradually rehabilitated in the 20th century.
