1951 DB Barquette by Antem "Tourisme coursifiée - Lot 95
1951 DB Barquette by Antem "Tourisme coursifiée Chassis no. 768 Portuguese registration document FFVE certificate - Eligible for Mille Miglia, Mans Classic, Tour Auto! - Portuguese history from the start - Fully restored Designed by Jean Antem "junior", the D.B Antem was produced in just twenty examples. Two variants can be distinguished: the competition barquette and the touring version. A seven-unit production run, the racing version features all-aluminum bodywork, two side-by-side fuel filler caps and no exterior door handles. Touring versions feature steel front ends and doors, light-alloy windshield frames, bumpers and soft top. The front hood, trunk and rear end remain in aluminum. Like all D.B. models of the period, they are equipped with a Panhard engine and gearbox, and a chassis designed by Deutsch & Bonnet, structured around a square-section central beam. The example presented, chassis no. 768, was delivered new on September 7, 1951 in Lisbon to the Portuguese pilot José Emidio Da Silva, in a "touring" configuration, and registered IE-17-74. It immediately embarked on an interesting sporting career. On September 29, 1951, entered at the Circuit de Vila do Conde under n°12, he placed 5ᵉ overall. On March 16, 1952, Da Silva took the wheel again at the Rampa do Gradil, which he finished in 22ᵉ place. On April 20, he wins the Tourism category of the Vila do Conde Spring Rally. On May 25, the car appears at the start of the Lisbon International Rally (n°128), but has to retire. On June 26, 1953, the car was entered in the Boavista Taça Cidade in Porto under n°19. For the occasion, it was lightened: bumper, windscreen, soft top and roll bars were removed, replaced by a wide, flat windscreen. The preparation pays off: the D.B wins the 750 cm³ class and ranks 4ᵉ overall. The adventure continued at the Monsanto Taça Cidade in Lisbon on July 25, 1953 (#4), where she had to retire once again. At the end of the season, on December 20, 1953, she took part in the 12 Hours of Casablanca (n°33) with Da Silva and Peireira, taking 4ᵉ place in the Sport category and 14ᵉ overall. Alain Gaillard also mentions a participation in the 1953 Alba Grand Prix in his book D.B 1932-1962, but no further sources could be found. The #768's sporting career ended in 1954 with the Rallye Figueira da Foz (no. 10) and the Tour of Portugal (no. 38), this time back in its original configuration with bumper, windscreen and soft top. On August 26, 1960, the car changed ownership to Oquiles Dias Vieira, also based in Lisbon. A further change took place on December 11, 1965, to Louis Filipe Felhado Ferrerra. Sheltered for several decades, it reappears in 2010 after an initial refurbishment, still registered IE-17-74, dressed in bright red and presented in its "coursified" configuration at Porto's Boavista Taça Cidade. It then underwent a second, more thorough restoration, in which it was given a dark red hue and returned to the event's n°19. Its current owner will acquire it at auction in September 2019. For a return as close as possible to its original configuration, certain elements will have to be refabricated or fitted: a compliant gearshift, a period hood logo, more appropriate front indicators and, above all, Panhard Dyna X84 hubs and rear drums, components also used on the D.B Racers 500 and Monomill. In fine overall condition and with a well-documented sporting past, D.B Antem #768 represents a rare opportunity. It is eligible for prestigious historic events such as Le Mans Classic, the Mille Miglia and the Tour Auto.
