THE FUTURE MARSHAL IN THE WAGRAM CAMPAIGN - Lot 249
THE FUTURE MARSHAL IN THE WAGRAM CAMPAIGN PONIATOWSKI (Józef Antoni). Letter signed "Joseph Prince Poniatowski" as General-in-Chief of the Army of the Grand Duchy of Warsaw, addressed to a count. Krakow, July 19, 1809. One p. in-4. Very rare " ... If the satisfaction that His Majesty the Emperor has deigned to show the Polish army gives us the certainty of having fulfilled our duty, the idea of having earned the esteem of French warriors can only add to the feeling it gives us. As we like to remember that it is to their efforts that we owe our existence, it is sweet for us to discharge at least part of our debt by sharing in the defense of the interests of the common cause. Please be persuaded, Monsieur le Comte, that the flattering dispositions you have shown me are a new reason for me to hope that favorable circumstances will allow me to prove to you how much I appreciate them. It will then be a pleasure for me to cultivate your friendship, which I am eager to renew with you as an expression of my high esteem...". Prince Poniatowski, commander-in-chief of the Polish, Saxon and French troops in the Grand Duchy of Warsaw, provided invaluable assistance to the Grand Army engaged against Austria, by securing Archduke Ferdinand's troops in Galicia, which, after gaining the upper hand for a time, were largely defeated. A copper-engraved portrait of Marshal Poniatowski is included.
