"I FEEL EACH MOMENT MORE AND MORE HOW MUCH I EXIST THROUGH H - Lot 246
"I FEEL EACH MOMENT MORE AND MORE HOW MUCH I EXIST THROUGH HER AND FOR HER...". NECKER (Jacques). Autograph letter [to François Coindet]. S.l., May 19, 1794. One p. in-12. "I had no doubt, Monsieur, of your interest. I am more unhappy than I can express. Everything is empty for me and every moment I feel more and more how much I existed through her and for her. I don't know what time will do to me, but at the moment I don't believe in what they say. There are feelings that come in all forms at my age, the season of destruction is over. Adieu, Monsieur..." Jacques Necker mourns his wife, who died on May 6, 1794: a strong personality and great beauty, Suzanne Curchod was the daughter of a pastor and had received a meticulous education in the sciences, modern languages and ancient languages. She had run a salon in Paris open to philosophers and encyclopedists: d'Alembert, Buffon, Diderot, l'abbé Raynal, l'abbé Morellet. She founded the charitable institution that became today's Hôpital Necker. On François Coindet, see n° 245 above.
