Dominique-Jean LARREY (1766-1842) Surgeon-in-Chief of the Grande Armée LARREY (Dominique-Jean). Autograph signed "D. J. Larrey Dr m. x [Greek chi letter]". S.l.n.d. One p. in-16 oblong on azure laid paper; foxing. Framed under glass. "If the fever subsides, the patient will be given two enemas made with a decoction of linseed, to which will be added two heads of white poppy and a little oriental saffron and olive oil. Tonight a footbath and diet...". A symbol of emergency surgery in the early 19th century, Dominique-Jean Larrey (1766-1842) was Surgeon-in-Chief of the Consular and Imperial Guard, Surgeon-in-Chief of the Grande Armée, Inspector General of the Health Service, and a member of the Académie des Sciences and the Académie de Médecine. He took part in all Napoleon's campaigns, from Italy (1796-1797) to Waterloo (1815).
