THE "BOOK ON EGYPT" ATLAS JOMARD (Edme-François). Autograph letter signed. [Paris], June 12, 1826. One p. in-4, printed letterhead "Ministère de l'Intérieur. Commission d'Égypte"; margins reinforced on verso. "Sir, I hasten to reply to the letter you did me the honor of writing yesterday. The distribution of the work on Egypt has not yet been ordered, in view of the question that has arisen concerning the geographical atlas. However, the atlas is on sale at the book depository at the Institut. The table of contents will undoubtedly be finished soon, and we will be able to deliver the last complete part...". Edme-François Jomard, coordinator of the Description de l'Égypte. Edme-François Jomard (1777-1862), an engineer and geographer who had studied at the Ponts and Polytechnique engineering schools, took part in the Egyptian Expedition (1798-1801), and was a member and, from 1807 onwards, general secretary of the Egyptian Commission responsible for publishing the Description de l'Égypte. It was he who, through his energy and tenacity, directed the publication of this monument of scientific erudition, the founder of modern Egyptology, from 1810 to 1829 (issues dated 1809-1822). The explorer Linant Bey was one of the fathers of the Suez Canal, and was in charge of public works in the Egyptian government, which made him a minister.
