ONE OF THE FALLEN HEROES OF MOSKOVA - Lot 216
ONE OF THE FALLEN HEROES OF MOSKOVA CAULAINCOURT (Auguste-Jean-Gabriel de). Autograph letter signed as Grand Esquuyer of the Kingdom of Holland to the Grand Master of the Household of King Louis Bonaparte, Paul-Gabriel d'Alichoux de Sénégra. S.l., "ce 11 mars". 2 pp. in-12. Strongly suggests that an employee of the Palais be dismissed, a "bad subject" with "morals more than suspect" who "directs and mounts the heads of his comrades for not complying with orders and instructions". Brother of the Duc de Vicence, General Auguste-Jean-Gabriel de Caulaincourt (1777-1812) made a career in the cavalry and was wounded at Marengo. Placed for a time with Louis Bonaparte, he was authorized to follow him to his kingdom of Holland, where he served as aide-de-camp, general-major and Grand-Ecuyer, and completed a mission to Naples as Dutch ambassador. Having retained command of his French regiment, he served at Austerlitz, and, after the annexation of the kingdom in 1808, returned permanently to French service as brigadier general - he was made a baron. He then served on the general staff of the Spanish army, soon attaining the rank of division general, took part in several battles, but returned to France in 1810 for health reasons - he was made a Comte d'Empire. Employed in the Russian campaign, he commanded the imperial headquarters, but was killed by a cannonball at the battle of La Moskova after taking the terrible Russian "great redoubt".
