BONAPARTE (Joseph). Autograph letter signed "Joseph" as King - Lot 210
BONAPARTE (Joseph). Autograph letter signed "Joseph" as King of Naples. Naples, August 28, 1807. 3/4 p. in-4. "Sir, I have received your work, for which I thank you. I have not yet had my bust made, but I would be happy to send it to you, sure that it is not requested by flattery that deceives, by admiration that seduces itself, but by a good feeling of esteem and attachment. I am delighted to hear that you are doing well; believe, Sir, that I am always pleased to hear from you. Yours affectionately..." A later pencilled note reads "to Tissot", probably the writer and lawyer Pascal-Alexandre Tissot, who in 1807 published a French translation of the Justinian Code, the most important part of the Corpus juris civilis, commissioned by the Byzantine emperor Justinian, a distant precursor of Napoleon I in his desire to overhaul the law.
