NAPOLEON TIGHTENS ARMISTICE TERMS AFTER FRIEDLAND - Lot 206
NAPOLEON TIGHTENS ARMISTICE TERMS AFTER FRIEDLAND BERTHIER (Louis-Alexandre). Letter signed "mal Ale Berthier" as major-general of the Grande Armée, addressed to Jérôme Bonaparte. Tilsit [today Sovietsk in the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad], June 27, 1807. One p. in-4. "I have the honor of sending Your Highness an ampliation of the armistice concluded between Emperor Napoleon and the King of Prussia. You will please take the necessary measures for the execution of the provisions of the armistice. I have the honor of informing Your Highness that articles 2 and 4 of the armistice between Emperor Napoleon and Emperor Alexander are common to the armistice agreed with the Prussian army...". The battle of Friedland and the capture of Kœnigsberg, on June 14 and 16 1807, had just ended the Polish campaign between France, Russia and Prussia. Two separate armistices were signed by Alexandre Berthier with his Russian (June 21) and Prussian (June 25) counterparts. An additional article was signed with Prussia on June 27, to integrate two articles from the armistice with Russia into the armistice with Prussia: article 2, which stipulates that in the event of a truce being broken, a one-month period must be respected before hostilities can be resumed, and article 4, which sets the respective position limits of the French and Russian armies. This addition meant that Prussia could also be threatened if Russia broke the armistice. The present letter informs Jérôme Bonaparte of this addition: the emperor's youngest son, then a major general, commanded the 9th corps of the Grande Armée and had just received the capitulation of Glatz (now Kłodzko in southern Poland). He would be made King of Westphalia a few days later by the Treaties of Tilsit, signed with Russia (July 7, 1807) and Prussia (July 9, 1807). Provenance : Sale Binoche, Renaud Giquello - June 25, 2009 n°8 - Drouot Paris.
