BEAUHARNAIS (Eugène de). Letter signed "Eugène Napoléon" as - Lot 205
BEAUHARNAIS (Eugène de). Letter signed "Eugène Napoléon" as Viceroy of Italy, addressed to the future Marshal Jacques-Alexandre-Bernard Law de Lauriston. Milan, May 1, 1806. One p. in-4, some traces of moisture with ink transfer from another missive on the last blank page. Following the campaign of Austerlitz, the Treaty of Presburg signed between France, Austria and Russia allocated the Veneto and its former Dalmatian possessions to the Kingdom of Italy organized by Napoleon I. In May 1806, General Molitor was commissioned to occupy Dalmatia, and General Lauriston to take control of Ragusa. However, a Russian fleet landed an expeditionary force to lay siege to the port city, and Lauriston owed his salvation only to a ruse on Molitor's part, which enabled the siege to be lifted at the end of the month. " ... I hope you have now received the various consignments sent to you, which should ensure your position in the country. Last night I received a letter from His Majesty containing these words: Write to Lauriston to stay in Dalmatia, and if he is already in Milan, to wait there for the new orders I will send him within the next few days. As soon as I receive these orders, I will send them to you. I hope that if they keep you away from us, it will at least be so that we can join you. Surely you have no doubt of the pleasure it would give me to see you again and renew my old feelings..." Jointly, 2 copper-engraved portraits of Prince Eugène.
