Louis-Aimé GROSCLAUDE ( 1784-1869) "La tireuse de cartes, village scene". Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. Exhibited at the Salon des artistes in Paris in 1839. H. 71 x W. 88 cm. Note: This work deals with two main themes: fortune-telling, a very popular activity at the time, and the ages of life. On the left, we see the hopeful young woman, in love with a rose in her hand, seeking to know her future thanks to the card reader; on the right, the old father asleep on the kitchen table. Franco-Swiss painter, student of Regnault, Académie des Beaux-Arts de Paris, member of the Berlin Academy, Salons de Paris et Genève from 1820 to 1846. His works were highly appreciated and sought-after during the artist's lifetime, and he counted among his regular clients such major collectors as the King of Prussia, the Baron de Rothschild...
