Francesco BRINI, OR del BRINA, ACTIVE IN FLORENCE BETWEEN 15 - Lot 7
Francesco BRINI, OR del BRINA, ACTIVE IN FLORENCE BETWEEN 1540 AND 1586 "Madonna with Cherries, Child and Saint John the Baptist". Oil on poplar panel. Early inscription on back of panel: Frsco Brina (signature?). Panel dimensions: H. 78.5 x W. 60.5 cm. Dimensions with frame : H. 100 x W. 83 cm. Weight : 13 kilos. (Minor missing paint layer). Note : Rare religious representation with cherries, symbolizing the sweetness of Paradise and the blood of Christ's passion. Along with his older brother Giovanni, who studied in Michele Tosini's studio, Francesco Brina was a talented interpreter and a key figure in the revival of Florentine painting in the second half of the 16th century. Alongside the creation of large altarpieces and frescoes for Tuscan churches, Brina also produced small and medium-sized panels, such as the one in question, mainly depicting the Holy Families or Madonnas with Child, strongly characterized by compositional and stylistic homogeneity (Ref. bibliography: Alessandro Nesi, 'Ombre e luci su Francesco Brina', Arte Cristiana, 2006). Provenance: estate, Geneva.
