Jean-Baptiste Bernard DEMAY, born November 6, 1758 in Paris (parish of Notre Dame de la Bonne Nouvelle) and died March 15, 1848 in the capital, was a French cabinetmaker and upholsterer renowned for the artistic quality of his work. Awarded the title of master cabinetmaker in 1784, he practiced in Paris. His workshop produced a fine range of chairs and some very fine, sober mahogany furniture. A supplier to the Court, notably for Queen Marie-Antoinette, he produced seats with fan-shaped backs or in the shape of a hot-air balloon, a fashionable motif since the first hot-air balloons took to the skies in 1783.
