The sheet bearing the poem "Chien de chasse" bears two autograph notes by Marie Laurencin, added at the time: "L'Angleterre reine des mers en paix, Gabrielle Buffet reine des cœurs en guerre" (Gabrielle Buffet was Francis Picabia's wife at the time) and "Picasso, la cruauté extraordinaire de son visage, d'ailleurs aucune humanité dans son esprit".
The original drawing depicts female portraits, apparently self-portraits in mirrors (ink and pen, approx. 4x6cm).
Having married the German painter Otto von Wätjen in June 1914, Marie Laurencin was expatriated for the duration of the war, living in Spain, Madrid and Barcelona, where she contributed texts and illustrations to Francis Picabia's magazine 391. After spending time in Germany, Italy and Switzerland, she returned to France in 1921 and divorced her husband that same year.
Attached is a photographic portrait of Marie Laurencin (28.7x20.7cm), with handwritten caption on verso, "Marie Laurencin rue Vaneau, 1952".
