GOLOVINE (Ivan Gavrilovitch). 3 autographed letters, one in German and two in French.
To Verlags-Comptoir in Grimma [southeast of Leipzig, Germany], Geneva, May 12, 1850. "Ich arbeite an einem Seitenstück zu den Memoiren eines russischen Priesters, betitelt: "Memoiren eines russischen Kammerherrn, oder Geheimnisse des St-Petersburger Hofes". Wenn Sie geneigt wären es zu verlegen, so belieben Sie mir wissen zu lassen, unter welchen Bedingungen Sie es thun wollen..." (one p. in-8). The work, originally published in French in Paris in 1849, was published in German translation in 1850 under the title Memoiren eines russischen Priesters oder das religiöse Russland. -To a gentleman. Würzburg [between Frankfurt and Nuremberg], n.d. "Would it be an effect of your complaisance to send me back my manuscript, as you offered to do, several months ago..." (in French, 1/2p. in-8). -To a prelate. Saint-Germain-en-Laye, February 25, 1875. "God will give victory to the Holy Father at the moment when the weakest despair of it the most. For this, we need to group a few more universals around the Holy See. Bismarck's reptile funds go the wrong way, do not always reach their destination and remain partly in unfaithful hands [Bismarck had created a fund to bribe the press in favor of his policy, which he called the "Reptile Fund" out of contempt for journalists]. He himself did not show his ordinary spirit by engaging in a struggle which bol[e]versed the state instead of fortifying it. A little more boldness in your camp is desirable. I'm Russian without being Roman Catholic, but I'm all the more aware of the vice that gnaws at the schismatic Church that calls itself Orthodox. Lutheranism must be resolutely combated, and its emptiness demonstrated..." (2pp.1/2 in-8).
