SÉVIGNÉ (Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, marquise de). Lettres [...] à madame la comtesse de Grignan sa fille. ÀLaHaye, chez P.Gosse, J.Néaulme comp., 1726. 2tomes in one volume in-12, (20of which the second is blank)-344-(2dof which the second is blank)-(2dof which the second is blank)-298-(14of which the last is blank)pp., granulated brown basane, ribbed spine decorated with black fillets with brown title-piece, framed with black fillets on the boards, speckled edges; binding a little worn (period binding). Partly first edition. Madame de Sévigné's correspondence was only gradually made available to the public: a collection of 31 letters was first printed in Troyes in 1725, of which only a few remain today; a second edition, the first to be distributed, included 138 letters and was published clandestinely in Rouen in 1726 by Nicolas-Claude Thiériot. The present edition, corrected and enlarged, includes 177 letters.
