Partly first edition, compiled by the actor Charles Varlet dit LaGrange, a friend of Molière, and Jean Vivot. It includes 6 original plays: Don Garcie de Navarre, L'Impromptu de Versailles, Don Juan, MŽlicerte, Les Amants magnifiques and LaComtesse d'Escarbagnas.
The preface is the first biographical essay on Molière.
DonJuan, in volume VII, comprises 11 cards: f.L7 (p.134), M2-3(pp.139-142), N1(pp.147-148), P4-5(pp.175-178), R6(pp.203-204), S2-4 andT1 (pp.211-218).
VolumeVIII appears here in its first pure state, as indicated by the text variants in the plays LesAmants magnifiques (p.74,), LaComtesse d'Escarbagnas (pp.89 and 90) and LeMalade imaginaire (pp.178, 179 and 190).
Copper-engraved illustrations, mainly by Jean Sauvé after Pierre Brissard. This is the first edition in which each play is preceded by a plate. A total of 30frontispieces, 21 of which are out-of-text and 9 full-page in the text. These prints are typical of those made in 1682, and not of those regrafted in 1697. Some of them are based on previously published plates: the frontispiece of L'École des femmes, for example, in which Molière is depicted, is based on that of the 1663 edition.
Provenance: the writer and journalist M.A. ou Louis Laus, dit Laus de Boissy, lieutenant particulier de la Connétablie et rapporteur du Point-d'honneur (1747-1799, ex-libris vignette on the first flyleaf of the first volume). -The fermier général Antoine-Charles Saulot de Bospin, administrateur général des Domaines (1733-1804, ex-libris vignette on the front flyleaf of the first volume). -Lebaron de LaChaise (ex-libris vignette on verso of upper flyleaf of first volume). -Max Brun has written a bibliographical note in pencil on the lower flyleaf of vol.VIII.
