ÀAmsterdam, chez Michel Charles LeCène, 1720. small in-8, ornate marbled brown calf (period binding). First edition. Copper-engraved emblem on title. Without the frontispiece portrait. Coquettish and frivolous, but also witty and cultured (she supported Molière), the Duchess of Orleans Henrietta of England inspired love in many men of the Court, including Louis XIV himself. Bossuet delivered her funeral oration ("Madame se meurt, Madame est morte") and the Comtesse de LaFayette, who was close to her, wrote the present history.
