GNOMONIQUE. -VIVOT (C.L.). Traité de gnomonique, ou l'Art de faire des cadrans. With the principal tables of this science. [Late eighteenth century]. In-4, 189-(20)pp. on azure laid paper, brown shagreened basane, spine ribbed, cloisonné and fleuronné, decorated edges, red edges; slightly worn binding with snags to headpieces and missing title-piece, a few wormholes in lower margins (period binding). An important compilation based on several earlier works, principally the Nouveaux traités de trigonométrie rectiligne et sphérique published in 1741 by the mathematician, statistician and engineer Antoine Deparcieux (1703-1768), a member of the Académie des Sciences who worked as a sundial builder, and the Traité de la construction et des principaux usages des instrumens de mathématique published in 1709 by the engineer Nicolas Bion. The name of the compiler, who calls himself a priest, appears in two bookplates in the same hand as the text, dated 1787 on a flyleaf, and 1790 on the title. Beautifully illustrated with 72figures drawn in pen and ink, occupying a total of 24pp.
