BERNARDIN DE SAINT-PIERRE (Jacques-Henri-Bernardin Saint-Pierre, known as). Paul et Virginie. ÀParis, de l'imprimerie de Monsieur, 1789. In-18, xxxv-(one)-243-(one)pp. in shagreened tawny basane, smooth cloisonné and ornate spine with red title-piece, brown fillet framing the boards, ornate coupes, speckled edges; top headband frayed, corners rubbed; last leaf a little shorter (contemporary binding). First separate edition published the year after the original: Bernardin de Saint-Pierre had originally published the work in 1788 in the fourth volume of his Études de la nature. Copper-engraved illustrations: 4 plates hors texte, 3 from drawings by Jean-Michel Moreau dit Moreau le Jeune, and one from a drawing by Joseph Vernet.
