Chants chansons populaires de la France. Paris, H.-L. Delloy - Lot 3
Chants chansons populaires de la France. Paris, H.-L. Delloye, librairie de Garnier, frères, 1843-1844. 3 vols. large in-4, (60) +(61) +(60)ff. printed, eggplant half-calf, threaded ribbed spines, general covers of volumes preserved, soft cardboard cases; a few yellowed leaves in vol.II (Koehler). Famous Romantic illustrated book, in second printing. Originally published by Henri Delloye alone, in 84 issues from February 1842 to October 1843, with 3 fascicles for the introductory leaves of each volume, this publisher, in financial difficulties, sold his collection to the Garnier brothers, who were already the depositories for the work's distribution. The Garnier bookshop then commissioned a second printing of Chants chansons populaires de la France, in 1843-1844, with new covers. For each song, the book includes a note by writer Théophile Marion Dumersan, and notated tunes in arrangements with keyboard accompaniment by composer and musicographer Hippolyte Colet (husband of writer Louise Colet). These include traditional folk tunes such as "Malbrough s'en va-t-en guerre", "Cadet Rousselle" and "LaMère Michel", as well as literary works by François-Augustin Paradis de Moncrif, Marie-Joseph Chénier and Pierre-Jean de Béranger. Extensive copper-engraved illustrations by various artists, based on drawings by Louis-Léopold Boilly, Charles-François Daubigny, Ernest Meissonier, GustaveStaal, Louis Steinheil and others. Comprising336compositions, including 3 general titles, and 333 prints, each with lyrics, scenes and ornaments, all printed on 168 double-sided sheets. Provenance: William Vincens Bouguereau (bookplate).
